Biirkn – Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin
Thomas Bärnthaler from the Süddeutsche Zeitung invited me in 2016 to contribute to his DIY initiative for the weekly supplement SZ–Magazin. The aim is to design for the readers an object they can hand craft and construct by themselves, a wonderful idea that perpetuates the DIY tradition sharing contemporary designs. It was exciting to take part among architects, artists and designers such as Zaha Hadid, Konstantin Grcic, Hella Jongerius, Ai Weiwei, Sam Hecht, Ingo Maurer, Ross Lovegrove and Moritz Waldemeyer.
My DIY project it called Biirkn, a pendant light shaped from felt.
I have always been fascinated by fashion designers using pattern to development complex forms and thought it would be the perfect technique to create the Biirkn light. What an inviting task that is to create a 3-dimensional form without complicated tooling… Felt had the material property required, you can work out the right stiffness by spraying starch and once it’s dry, the magic of pattern cutting transforms the flat felt into a gentle soft 3-dimentional shade. The beautiful thing about the DIY projects is that they are open for interpretation; I can envision endless variations of the Biirkn pendant light in different materials, sizes and colours..
